Arts Council Lecture: Mosaics

Smyrna Arts Council Lecture: "Mosaics"

Wednesday, April 1, 2026
6:30-7:30 p.m.
Smyrna Public Library, Meeting Room
Free admission. Registration required.

Description: Explore the enduring art of mosaics in this engaging lecture that traces the medium from ancient Mediterranean origins through the splendor of the Byzantine Empire and into contemporary practice. Discover how mosaics have been used across cultures to tell stories, adorn architecture, and create lasting works of art.

Learn about the artist’s process—from concept and design to material selection, cutting techniques, and installation. The session concludes with a hands-on exploration of mosaic materials, offering participants a tactile introduction to the materials, tools, and creative possibilities.

Presenter: Karen Sasine, founder of Rainbow Mosaics
After discovering her passion for the craft in 2001, Karen Sasine founded Rainbow Mosaics and gained early acclaim, including being honored for "Mosaic of the Year" in 2007. Her artistic vision was further refined by an immersive study of ancient and contemporary techniques at the Orsoni Smalti Glass Foundry in Italy. Over a 25-year career, her diverse body of work has earned international awards and led to the creation of Mosaic Mentoring, a global online community. Now based in Marietta, Georgia, Sasine continues to innovate through her art and her specialized business, Rainbow Colorants.

This lecture series is sponsored by the Smyrna Arts Council.
