The City of Smyrna is offering a schedule of special programs and activities during February for Black History Month. This year's national theme is "Black Health and Wellness" (theme established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History www.asalh.org).
Special Note: Due to health concerns and COVID, the planned speaker and feature event for 2022 has been moved to June 17, 2022 - look for announcements during Juneteenth for your opportunity to register and attend An Evening with Erica Armstrong Dunbar. - February 4 – Family Take-Home Craft Kit – Friday, February 4 – 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Make a tassel & bead garland in traditional Black History Month colors to decorate your door, mantel or bookshelf in celebration of Black History Month - Library
- February 5 – Children’s Take-Home Craft at Smyrna Museum – Saturday, February 5 - 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Make a Harriet Tubman Lantern – Museum
- February 20 - Dedication of New Gates at Mt. Zion Cemetery on Hawthorne– Sunday, February 20 – 1:30 to 2:30 pm –Please consult City of Smyrna social media and website for updates. Learn more about Mt. Zion Cemetery on Hawthorne
- February 22 – Authentic African Cooking with Nancy Lartey – Tuesday, February 22 – 6:30 pm – Hear about Nancy’s childhood in Gabon and learn to make one of her favorite recipes – for ages 8-12 years old (RSVP) – Library
- All Month – Virtual Video Highlighting African American Community Stories in the Museum’s Collection – viewable from links from Museum and Library Facebook pages - Museum
- All Month – Children’s Coloring Contest – Enter the drawing contest and be eligible to win a free book by Mechal Roe – Library
- All Month – “I Spy” Children’s Activity – Children will be challenged to find items in the display case with the same initial letter as famous African Americans such as Hank Aaron and Harriet Tubman. - Library
- All Month – Material Displays for All Ages – In-house book and media displays of titles in the collection by African American authors and about African American history and biography. Virtual book displays on Facebook, recommending popular titles in the print and digital collections. - Library
