DESCRIPTION:<h3>Adult Art Workshop: Painted Canvas Totes inspired by Gee's Bend Quilts</h3><strong>Celebrating Black History Month</strong><br><br>Friday, February 17, 2023<br>10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon<br>Smyrna Library Meeting Room<br>ages 18 &amp; up<br><strong>Workshop is FULL!</strong><br><br>Celebrate Black History Month by painting a canvas tote in a style that pays homage to the strength and artistry of the quilters of Gee’s Bend.<br><br>Gee’s Bend is an isolated rural community just southwest of Selma, Alabama and was once the site of a cotton plantation. After the Civil War, many emancipated slaves stayed in Gee’s Bend, becoming sharecroppers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>Economic difficulty and need led the quilters of Gee’s Bend to develop a quilting style known for geometric flair and lively improvisation. Such quilts, sewn from scraps, now grace museums across the world, their beauty compared to the works of Klee and Matisse.&nbsp;<br><br>Formed in 2003, the women of the Gee’s Bend Collective continue creating quilts.<br><div></div>
