DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Wednesday, February 25 - Build a Telescope!</strong><br><em>a Semiquincentennial event</em><br><em>a Black History Month event</em><br><br>4:00-4:45 p.m.<br>Smyrna Library, Meeting Room<br>ages: 4-6 years old PLUS parent/grandparent/caregiver<br><strong><a href="https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DAEA629A5F94-61861065-tinker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RSVP – registration required</a></strong><br><br><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Event Description:</span></strong> In honor of Benjamin Banneker, we will make our own telescopes. The type we will build is also called a monocular or a spyglass.<br><br>Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was a self-educated astronomer, mathematician, and writer. He is most well known for writing almanacs which contained astronomical data, like phases of the moon, planetary movements, and daylight hours. He also served on a survey team to determine the boundaries of Washington, D.C.<br><br>2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. In celebration, Smyrna Library is hosting events to honor our country’s founding fathers and mothers.<br><br>Tinker Lab Jr. offers hands-on building activities for kids and adults working together. The library's goal for Tinker Lab Jr. is to provide an opportunity for an adult and a child to learn together and work collaboratively to solve a problem or create something new. Tinker Lab is not a drop-in program for all ages. It is designed to be a one-to-one learning experience for 4-6 year-old children and their parent/caregiver. The activities are too complex for children younger than 4 years old.<br><br>Reminders:<br>- Please no daycare groups.<br>- Please do not bring younger siblings.<br>- Please arrive on time.
