In addition to the hourly pay rate, Sanitation Workers receive an additional $2. per hour hazard pay for each hour worked.

Sanitation Workers who arrive on time and complete their route are paid for a full 8-hour day even if the route is completed in less time. This position is also eligible for overtime pay. 

JOB SUMMARY 

This position is responsible for assisting in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables. 

MAJOR DUTIES 

• Attends a truck along a predetermined route to collect and transport solid waste and recyclable materials.
• Assists in the collection of yard debris and large items.
• Assists with pre-trip inspections to assigned equipment or vehicle; checks brakes, lights, belts, hoses, fluid levels, air pressure, etc., reports equipment or vehicle service, maintenance, or repair needs to immediate supervisor.
• Provides information and assistance to the general public.
• Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION 

• Knowledge of the basic methods, techniques, and equipment used in the collection of solid waste and recyclables.
• Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and operating procedures related to the operation and maintenance of assigned trucks and related equipment.
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
• Skill in utilizing a variety of tools and equipment in performing solid waste collection activities.
• Skill in the loading and unloading of solid waste and other materials. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 

The Sanitation Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES 

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, supervisory instructions, traffic laws, and safety policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK 

• The work consists of related duties in the collection of solid waste and recyclables. Heavy traffic, unsanitary conditions, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to assist in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective management of solid waste.

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT 

• The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in a truck and outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Must successfully pass criminal background.
• Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and physical.
