JOB SUMMARY

This position assists in the repair and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection system.

MAJOR DUTIES 

  • Identifies and repairs water leaks.
  • Assists in changing out water meters and in replacing meter boxes.
  • Repairs and replaces valves.
  • Turns water service on and off as directed.
  • Installs backflow prevention devices.
  • Repairs fire hydrants.
  • Assists in the excavation of water and sewer lines.
  • Flushes water services and fire hydrants.
  • Locates and repairs water leaks.
  • Repairs landscaping damaged during work activities
  • Transports equipment and personnel.
  • Responds to emergency situations during the day and after hours.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION 

  • Knowledge of water meter installation and repair principles.
  • Knowledge of water and sewer systems maintenance and repair principles.
  • Knowledge of water parts and fittings.
  • Knowledge of safety rules.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in operating various types of equipment.
  • Skill in problem solving. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 

The Water &Sewer Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES 

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK 

  • The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the repair and maintenance of the water and sewer systems. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department. 

CONTACTS                                                                     

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, contractors, customers, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • The work is typically performed typically while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY 

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Less than one year of related experience required.
  • Must possess a current, valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle checks.
  • Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and physical.
