JOB SUMMARY
This position inspects fire hydrants and related systems.

MAJOR DUTIES
1. Inspects fire hydrants and related systems to monitor conditions, identify needed repairs, and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
2. Services existing hydrants and ensures proper working condition of new hydrants; flushes hydrants on a periodic basis; cleans and paints hydrants.
3. Conducts water flow testing to determine water pressure level and notifies supervisor of related problems or issues.
4. Maintains inspection and maintenance records.
5. Interprets and records readings from equipment/gauges.
6. Updates hydrant maps.
7. Prepares or completes forms, reports, correspondence, logs, mapping records, graphs, spreadsheets, or other documents.
8. Operates a service truck, global positioning system equipment, fire hydrants, water system valves, flow testing equipment, gauges, wrenches, painting equipment, etc.
9. Performs general maintenance tasks to keep vehicles, hydrants, equipment, and tools in operable condition.
10. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and the public.
11. Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
1. Knowledge of fire hydrant operation, construction, and use.
2. Knowledge of job-related tools and equipment.
3. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
4. Knowledge of GPS systems.
5. Knowledge of basic mechanical maintenance principles.
6. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
7. Skill in oral and written communication.
8. Skill in interpersonal relations.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Deputy Fire Chief of Administrative Services assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include state traffic laws, the ISO guide, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.  

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
• The work consists of related inspection and maintenance duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to inspect and maintain fire hydrants. Success in this position contributes to the safety of community life and property.

CONTACTS
• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, volunteers, elected and appointed officials, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
• The work is typically performed bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must distinguish between shades of color.
• The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• More than one year of related experience required.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Education in public administration, logistics, business, or a related field preferred.
• Progressively responsible experience in program coordination, logistics, asset management, or administrative support.
• Experience in a public safety or municipal environment.
