Licenses, Certificates, & Permits

Licenses, certificates, and permits in the City of Smyrna are issued and managed by various departments, including Community Development, the Police Department, and the City Clerk.

Occupational Tax Certificate Applications (Business Licensing)

Every person or business operating within city limits must have a current City of Smyrna Occupational Tax Certificate. All applications are processed by the Community Development Department through our online application portal.

Alcoholic Beverage License Applications

Any establishment selling alcohol within city limits must have a current City of Smyrna Alcohol Beverage License prior to engaging in the sale of alcohol. All applications are processed by the Community Development Department through our online application portal

Alcoholic Beverage Licenses are required for:

• Packages Sales (off-premises consumption);
• Pouring Sales (on-premises consumption);
• Catering (special events);
• Wholesale (distribution); and
• Manufacturing (breweries, wineries, distilleries).

1. Upon submission of the application, the applicant/agent will undergo a background check by the Smyrna Police Department.

2. All Alcoholic Beverage Licenses will be advertised two weeks prior to the scheduled public hearing by City Council (new license request) or the License and Variance Board (change of agent request).

3. In addition to local licensing, the State of Georgia requires state licensing for the sale of alcohol. More information on State licensing requirements may be found online.

** Please note: Applications for locations that have not had a privilege alcohol license within the past 12 months must be accompanied by a certified survey verifying that the proposed establishment meets all distance requirements as detailed in Chapter 6, Section 118 of the City's ordinance.


Alcohol Permits for Restaurant and Package Store Staff

All employees involved in either the dispensing, serving, or sale of alcoholic beverages are required to obtain a Photo Permit from the City Police Department. Those applying to pour or sell alcoholic beverages must undergo an investigation and be fingerprinted. The Photo Permit requirements under the City’s Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance may be viewed online.

To secure a Photo Permit, applicants must visit the Smyrna Police Department at 2646 Atlanta Rd SE. Walk-ins are welcome, though an appointment may be scheduled by calling the Smyrna Police at 678-631-5070.


Peddler Permits

Peddler Permits are required for any person or corporation seeking to conduct door-to-door solicitations within City of Smyrna limits. The Peddlers and Solicitors Ordinance may be viewed online.

To secure a Peddler Permit, applicants must visit the Smyrna Police Department at 2646 Atlanta Rd SE. Walk-ins are welcome, though an appointment may be scheduled by calling the Smyrna Police at 678-631-5070.


Photo/Film/Video Permit

Commercial photography and video shoots within City of Smyrna limits must be approved through the issuance of a Film Permit. The application should be submitted five (5) days prior to the shoot.

Short-Term Rental Licenses

All short-term rentals within City of Smyrna limits are required to obtain a Short-Term Rental License and Occupational Tax Certificate. All applications are processed by the Community Development Department through our online application portal.

To complete the application, please be prepared to supply proof of liability insurance, code compliance verification form, short-term rental agent form, proof of ownership, and, if owner-occupied, your homestead exemption or affidavit in lieu of homestead exemption.
