Yard Waste Ordinance taken effect on November 1, 2025.
There are several ways to check your sanitation scheduling. You may use the City's mapping feature which supplies additional information about your address in addition to your designated collection day. A pdf of the schedule is available and the number for the Public Works Department is 770-431-2850.

The City’s Residential Sanitation Division is responsible for performing the essential service of removal of garbage and refuse. Within the service set of Sanitation (under the Public Works Department) is residential garbage removal, curb-side recycling and yard waste removal.

The yard waste program has been performed each Monday
Beginning May 1, 2023, yard waste will be collected on Monday, except during weeks in which a holiday falls. Please note, in weeks affected by a holiday, the City does not perform yard waste collection, only household garbage collection. Look for special messages printed on the message line of your utility bill for notices regarding holiday sanitation schedules. Consider following City of Smyrna social media for updates and notices regarding services. - Leaves, grass clippings and small yard waste (small sticks, brush) must be placed in paper yard bags. (The use of plastic bags for yard waste is prohibited.) Note: Leaves are no longer vacuumed at curbside. Leaves for pickup should be placed in paper yard bags and placed at the curb prior to 7:00 a.m. on Monday (each Monday, except for holiday weeks).
Small trash items will be picked up the same day as your roll-out container.
Large trash items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, etc. need a work order request made by the resident. The City will charge a $30.00 fee for each item. You may request a large item collection online through the Service Request option. If you are unable to process online, you may contact the Public Works Department at (770) 431-2850.

The sanitation department delivers recycling bins to Smyrna residents. If you do not have a residential recycling bin, please call Sanitation at (770) 431-2850 to obtain one or submit your request with Smyrna 311. Bins are usually delivered automatically to new homes, and existing (resale) homes should already have them, but sometimes they get misplaced. New customers for the City’s sanitation service as well as the recycling program may apply for service at the City of Smyrna Utility Services Office located inside Smyrna City Hall, 2800 King Street. (678) 631-5438.
Frequently Asked Questions
Garbage carts, bags, boxes or other such containers shall not be placed or allowed at streetside prior to 6:00 p.m. on the evening prior to the scheduled day of collection; nor shall said container remain placed or allowed at streetside longer than 9:00 p.m. on the day of collection. Carts must be placed curbside by 7:00 am on scheduled collection day.
Trash will only be collected from carts provided by the City of Smyrna; no personal carts or cans will be collected.
Only general household waste will be collected in carts, no construction material or hazardous waste during collection.
All garbage or trash must be properly bagged in trash bags. Absolutely no loose debris in carts.
The following items shall be prohibited for disposal within the city: hazardous waste, any item containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, battery, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil, and cooking oil. These items are to be disposed of at the appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill.
No sharp items that can cause injury to collection personnel may be placed in cans.
Note: Paint can be disposed of at Smyrna Recycling Center for a fee.
The City of Smyrna Sanitation Department may replace damaged garbage carts upon inspection.

All City of Smyrna sanitation trash carts are labeled with observed holidays. During a holiday week your collection day will be adjusted based on the observed holiday. Please check our website at WWW.SMYRNAGA.GOV for changes to your schedule.

Backdoor collections can be provided for those residents who are unable to physically move their cart and bin to the curbside. This service requires the residence to have medical documentation sent to the sanitation department once a year. Carts and bins will have to be located outside the house where crews can have access to them with little difficulties.
Used medical sharps like syringes needles and lancets must be disposed of safely to prevent injuries and contamination. They should be placed in a sealed puncture proof container and properly labeled before being disposed of in the regular household trash.
Large trash items (trash items too large for regular garbage collection such as mattresses, appliances, furniture, etc.) will be picked up when a work order request is made by the resident calling (770) 431-2850 or going online and making a Service Request. The deadline for these requests is Wednesday’s by 3:30 p.m. of each week and the collection dates will be scheduled for Thursdays.
The City will charge a $30.00 fee for each large item.
The City will no longer pick up refrigerators, freezers, a/c units.
Removal of carpet and padding installed by a carpet contractor remains the responsibility of the resident's contractor. Please note there will be no large items collected during a holiday week.
The following must be removed by the property owner:
Debris as a result of an eviction. All construction materials, Dry wall, Concrete, Tile, Roofing materials, Wood. Rocks, Dirt, Vehicle or vehicle parts.
The city will provide weekly collection of small limbs, shrubs and bagged leaves and branches. This material is to be no more than 6 inches in diameter, no greater than five feet in length, and must be separated from the garbage. Pickup is limited to one pile no greater than 5 ft long, 5 ft wide and 5 ft high. Each residence will receive one yard waste collection per week. Collection will occur on Mondays except during a holiday week, no yard waste will be collected on holiday weeks. Yard waste bags may not exceed 30 lbs., and each property is limited to 10 bags per pick-up. Bags must be composed of recyclable paper, or a city purchase yard waste container at cost of $55.00 per cart. The city will not pick up dirt, rocks, mulch, logs, or stumps.
The city will not be responsible for contractors or tree arborists debris. Any piles greater than the 5 x 5 x 5 mentioned above in the ordinance will be subject to a fee.
5 x 5 x 10 will be a $25.00 fee.
Anything larger than 5 x 5 x 10 will be considered assistive and charged a fee of $75
Any leaf bags exceeding the 10 bags limit will be subject to a fee.
10 to 20 leaf bags will cost $10.00 (20 bag maximum pre week)
20 or more bags will be considered assistive and charged a fee of $75.
Smyrna yard waste carts will be a one time cost of $55.00 per cart. The city of Smyrna will not be responsible for any damage to carts during collection. If any damage occurs residents will be responsible for replacement.
The Sanitation Department provides curbside recycling bins to Smyrna residents (single family homes). If your residence does not have a bin, please submit a request through the online Service Request option or call Sanitation at (770) 431-2850 to obtain one. Bins are usually delivered automatically to new homes, and every residence should already have a container, but sometimes they get misplaced. 1 and 2 plastics, aluminum cans, steel cans, cardboard, pizza boxes, paper-based food serving packaging, mixed paper, magazines, mail, phone books, newspapers, food boxes and beverage containers.
Absolutely no glass, Grocery or take out plastic bags, batteries, paint cans, Styrofoam containers, aerosol spray cans.
Make sure to rinse out food and beverage cartons to avoid contamination.
If a container is heavily soiled and cannot be cleaned it should be placed in the trash.

Currently due to limited supply, recycling roll out carts are provided for commercial use only. However, you may purchase one from a big-box store, such as Home Depot, Lowe’s Etc. as long as the container is clearly marked for recyclables. The recycling crews will collect them during regular weekly service. The city is not responsible for any damage that might occur to these carts during collections.
