Connecting Community through Creativity

Collage of photos of colorful outdoor public artWhy Public Art?

Public art fosters a strong sense of community and civic pride. Through murals, sculptures, and other artistic installations, Smyrna’s history and cultural identity will be visually brought to life. By highlighting the natural beauty and diversity of Smyrna through public art, everyday spaces will be transformed into dynamic, inspiring environments. Additionally, artistic initiatives may encourage engagement among residents and visitors, making Smyrna a more enticing tourist destination. Therefore, public art provides many valuable opportunities, including economic growth, resulting in a greater quality of life.

Smyrna Public Art Committee

The Public Art Committee is essential for ensuring that public art in the City of Smyrna is thoughtfully planned and reflective of our community’s values and identity. The committee can provide guidance on the selection, placement, and maintenance of artworks, ensuring there is consistency throughout the process. By bringing together local artists, residents, city officials, and other stakeholders, the committee can help shape a cohesive vision for public art that aligns with Smyrna’s cultural and developmental goals. Additionally, the committee will also provide structure when managing budgets, partnerships, and long-term planning, assuring artwork installations uphold a sustainable and meaningful role within Smyrna’s landscape.

"Smith Frogs" - The First Artistic Leap in Smyrna

The City of Smyrna commissioned its frog sculptures from artist Beau Smith in 2007. These sheet copper, brass, and stainless steel sculptures were installed at Smyrna Public Library, Smyrna Pond, and Smyrna Market Village. At the Smyrna Public Library, a frog sits peacefully reading a book. The frog at Smyrna Pond rests on a large rock and happily overlooks the fish, frogs, turtles, and waterfowl residing at the pond. The frog statue at Smyrna Market Village depicts a parent and child sitting on a bench, enjoying ice cream. Each sculpture perfectly highlights its designated area within the community.

Smyrna Fire Hydrant Project

Completed in June 2025, the Smyrna Fire Hydrant Project brought a vibrant burst of color and creativity to the City. Spearheaded by Smyrna's Public Art Committee, the initiative brought together 14 talented local artists to transform ordinary fire hydrants into extraordinary works of public art. This unique collaboration highlights the City’s commitment to civic beautification, artistic expression, and community engagement. Smyrna is proud to showcase these 14 stunning pieces and celebrate the artists who brought them to life.
