The Fire Marshal’s Office is tasked with investigating the origin and cause of any fire or explosion within the City limits of Smyrna. This includes fires resulting in injury and/or death. The fire investigation unit consists of four investigators which are certified arson investigators and firefighters with 94 years of combined fire experience. Investigators are on call 24-hours a day, seven days a week to respond outside of their normal office hours. All personnel are active members of the Metro Arson Task Force, Metro Fire Investigators Association and the Georgia Fire Investigators Association.

Arson is a serious crime. Annually, the direct cost of arson fires cost the American tax payer over $2 billion dollars. Latest statistics indicate that 25 percent of all fires are caused by arson. Arson indirectly contributes to increased lost tax revenue and wages, unemployment insurance payments, relocation costs, insurance premiums, higher medical costs and the costs of police and fire services. Profit is cited in most studies as the primary motive for setting fires. Other motives include vandalism, fraud, revenge, concealment of another crime, and pyromania.

To help us combat this serious crime, please contact the City of Smyrna’s Fire Marshal’s Office with any information regarding fire related crimes.
