Public Safety Education

Smyrna Fire provides educational opportunities for various target groups in our community on topics such as:

• CPR/First Aid
• Fire Safety Education
• Disaster Preparedness

Tour a Fire Station

We encourage families with children to stop in at any of our five locations for a free educational tour of our facilities. During these visits, we encourage children and parents to see what types of services we offer as well as ask questions of our firefighting professionals.

Schedule a Public Safety Education Program for Kids

In addition to station tours, Smyrna Fire can provide a Public Safety Education program at your child's school or daycare.  This state-of-the-art, specially designed 27-foot travel trailer is capable of delivering  public safety programs in the field.  In addition to fire safety, this trailer also serves as a “storm” simulator, including a functioning television with weather alerts, window blinds that shake and thunder played through a surround sound system.

The Smyrna Fire Department proudly offers child safety seat inspections! 

During an inspection, a trained technician will teach you how to ensure your car seat is used and installed correctly.  If you need assistance obtaining a car seat, we have resources available to assist you.

FREE car seat inspections are available by appointment only from 9:00AM to 12:00PM twice each month at the following locations:

1st Saturday

NOTE:  Please book ONE appointment per family.  A second appointment is not necessary for additional seats or vehicles.  If possible, bring the owners manual for the vehicle AND the instruction manual for the child safety seat(s).

Helpful Tips to Ensure your Child is Safe:

• Always follow manufacturer's instructions.
• Infants should ride in rear-facing child safety seats as long as possible (a minimum of 12 months old and 20 pounds).
• Correctly secure children that weigh between 20 and 40 pounds in a forward facing child safety seat.
• Always use the safety seat tether for optimal protection.
• Correctly secure children over 40 pounds in a booster seat or other appropriate child restraint until the adult lap and shoulder safety belts fit correctly (approximately 4’9” and 80-100 pounds, usually between 8 and 12 years of age).
• Return the product registration card provided for all new child safety seats to the manufacturer to ensure you will be notified of any recalls.
• Check www.recalls.gov to inquire about any recalls or safety notices on child safety seats.
• Avoid purchasing safety seats from yard sales, flea markets and second hand stores.

Child Safety Seat Law - All children under 8 years of age are required to ride in an appropriate child safety seat in the back seat. (NHTSA and AAP also recommend that children remain in a booster seat until at least 4 feet-9 inches tall). 40-8-76.1 (b) (1)

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

If you have a working smoke alarm in your home, your chances of dying in a fire are cut nearly in half. Testing your smoke alarm regularly each week will help ensure that it will operate properly when it is needed. We encourage residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms at each time change, once in the spring and once in the fall. 

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing your smoke alarm if it is more than 10 years old. According to the NFPA the alarms have a 30 percent chance of failure after being installed for 10 years. NFPA also recommends that a dwelling have a smoke alarm installed on each level of the dwelling and outside each sleeping area.
