The City of Smyrna and its police department have added new cameras and drones to its suite of technology products and services that help keep the City safe. The products are among the many technology tools the Police Department uses to assist in solving crimes, apprehending criminals and protecting its residents.

This technology helps our team identify suspect vehicles, generate investigative leads, recover stolen property, locate missing persons or abducted children, and close cases faster.

No. The technology does not track vehicles continuously in real time. The system only detects a vehicle when it passes the specific Flock location. We do not use the system to monitor residents’ day-to-day routines, and all searches are logged and can be audited.

Images detected and recorded are of vehicles (typically the back or side), reading the license plate when it can. General vehicle descriptors like car color, make and model can be detected. The systems are not designed for facial recognition and are not used to identify drivers/passengers by their faces.

Authorized, trained law enforcement can reference the recorded detection for legal law-enforcement purposes only while the information is saved during the data retention period. The City of Smyrna intends to use data for official duties including stolen vehicles, missing persons cases, or vehicles connected to crimes.

The City of Smyrna complies with Georgia and national public records information requirements to ensure only authorized personnel may access and search the database; these searches are audited to protect from misuse. Flock’s systems include audit logs of who is accessing the system and identify misconduct and hold officers accountable. Any misuse of the data is cause for disciplinary action, including termination and/or criminal investigation, depending on circumstances.

Flock Safety was discussed at three meetings with the Smyrna City Council over the past three years, most recently on December 15, 2025. Red-light safety cameras have proven to reduce the number of red-light running collisions and their associated injuries and fatalities.

The City of Smyrna is dedicated to keeping its community safe. In order to do so, the City of Smyrna implemented a red-light safety camera program in June of 2023. The purpose of this program is to increase traffic safety in the city by reducing red-light running violations, collisions, and injuries without affecting city funds.

A red-light running violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. No images of the driver will be captured.

A comprehensive evaluation was conducted to determine where red-light running commonly occurs and where red-light safety cameras are most likely to improve road safety and reduce red-light running.

The fine amount for a red-light safety camera is $70. 

No, this citation is not considered a “moving violation”. It is a civil citation holding the registered owner responsible for the violation (like a parking ticket.) 1. What will this program cost the City of Smyrna and its taxpayers?

   The road safety camera program is set up to be fully funded through fines paid by red-light runners. According to the Federal Highway Administration, by reducing crashes, red-light safety cameras annually save communities $39,000 to $50,000 in collision-related expenses per location.

   Revenue generated from the program will help fund other traffic safety initiatives throughout the city.

The red-light safety cameras will be enforcing straight-through, left-hand turns, and U-turn red-light running violations. No right-hand turn violations will be enforced.
