Major Rick James
Uniform Patrol Division Commander


Maj. Rick James, is a native Georgian, from Acworth, GA. He is a graduate of North Cobb High School and The Citadel, The Military College of Charleston South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Arts of Political Science.  He is currently attending Columbus State University and is working to obtain a Masters of Public Safety Administration.

Maj. James began his career in Public Safety as a State Correctional Officer at Buford State Prison. In 1999, he joined the Smyrna Police Department and earned his Peace Officer Certification from North Central GA Law Enforcement Academy.  Maj. James took a strong interest in the area of evidence collection and criminal investigations, as well as in the training of other officers.  He soon began serving as a crime scene technician and Field Training Officer (FTO) in addition to his patrol duties. 

In March 2005, Maj. James was appointed to the position of Detective with the Smyrna Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. As a Detective he investigated all types of crimes, while generally assigned to larceny and auto theft.   As a Detective, Maj. James became a member of the Georgia Auto Theft Intelligence Council (GATIC), the South Eastern Transport Security Council (SETSC), and the Georgia Retail Association Organized Crime Alliance (GRAORCA) and remains a member of those organizations today. He also served with the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.  Maj. James became a certified Voice Stress Analyst VSA (for the purpose of truth verification for hiring and investigations) and has obtained an advance certification with the National Institute of Truth Verification (NITV).
